That is why<strong> urban communication<\/strong> should explain not only what is changing, but how that change relates to a wider system. Making these connections visible helps people better understand urban transformation and can reduce the perception of individual loss.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/div><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When you transform a city, people do not react to the project itself. They react to how they understand it.<\/p>\n<p>And here is the problem:<\/p>\n<p>Many urban projects are communicated as isolated decisions, even though they are part of systems in which decisions affect one another.<\/p>\n<p>And that changes everything.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge is not simply what is being changed, but how to explain one decision when it forms part of a much wider system.<\/p>\n<p>In other words: communicating an urban project is not just about explaining what is going to change. It is also about explaining how that change relates to the rest of the city.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>We live in interdependent cities, but we explain them as if they were not<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If we look at how a city works on a daily basis, it is easy to see how connected everything is.<\/p>\n<p>A person\u2019s journey depends on mobility decisions they do not control<\/p>\n<p>The quality of public space depends on multiple actors who intervene in it.<\/p>\n<p>Even something as everyday as walking down a street is shaped by a network of technical, political and social decisions that operate at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>The city works as an interdependent system.<\/p>\n<p>However, when we explain it, that interdependence disappears.<\/p>\n<p>Everyday language fragments the urban experience:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cyour mobility\u201d,<\/li>\n<li>\u201cyour time\u201d,<\/li>\n<li>\u201cyour access\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As if each citizen lived in an individual version of the city.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first important mismatch: <strong>we explain as individual experiences what are in fact collective systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And that mismatch has an important consequence for urban communication: <strong>we tend to talk about what changes for each person, but we do not always explain how that change is part of a larger system.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1393\" src=\"https:\/\/www.maiteperis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/fotos-ninos-espacio-publico-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"Ni\u00f1os y j\u00f3venes utilizan un espacio p\u00fablico transformado con bancos y mesas en la calle.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.maiteperis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/fotos-ninos-espacio-publico-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.maiteperis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/fotos-ninos-espacio-publico-980x476.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.maiteperis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/fotos-ninos-espacio-publico-480x233.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The problem is not that people do not understand the complexity of the city. It is that <strong>this complexity often does not become part of the explanation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When interdependence is not explained, change is perceived as loss<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This mismatch is not neutral. It has direct effects on how urban projects are perceived.<\/p>\n<p>When an intervention is not placed in the context of the system, the only thing that is visible is its immediate impact.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A change on a street is seen as a loss of parking.<\/li>\n<li>A change in traffic is seen as a disruption to routines.<\/li>\n<li>A construction site is seen as an immediate inconvenience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And from that point, the interpretation is almost automatic: something is being lost.<\/p>\n<p>Not necessarily because the project is wrong, but because the system it fits into has not been explained.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the absence of that wider context, each intervention is interpreted in isolation, and any change is perceived as an individual loss, not as a collective reorganisation.<\/p>\n<p>This helps to explain why the same urban transformation can generate very different reactions depending on how it is communicated.<\/p>\n<p>If we only make visible what a person loses, that will probably be the reference point from which they judge the project. If we also explain how that change relates to other objectives and decisions, we add a context that was not there before.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Communication can make the system behind the change visible<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The same urban intervention can create very different perceptions depending on how it is explained.<\/p>\n<p>When communication introduces the context of the system, the conversation stops focusing only on the individual impact and starts to include a wider view.<\/p>\n<p>The question stops being only \u201chow does this affect me?\u201d and becomes \u201cwhat is this change trying to improve within the city as a whole?\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Conflict is not removed, but its nature changes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Change stops being perceived as an imposition and starts to be understood as part of a wider reorganisation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And that difference can be decisive in the social acceptance of urban projects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.maiteperis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/contraste-trafico-y-transporte-publico.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"828\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.maiteperis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/contraste-trafico-y-transporte-publico.jpg 828w, https:\/\/www.maiteperis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/contraste-trafico-y-transporte-publico-480x314.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 828px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That is why communicating an urban transformation well does not mean getting everyone to agree with it. It means enabling people to understand what problem it addresses, what relationships it changes and what place it occupies within a wider system.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Communication does not remove conflict. But it can stop conflict from being built only around one part of the change.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Communicating interdependence means making the invisible visible<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The underlying challenge is not technical, but narrative.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Interdependence is not obvious.<\/li>\n<li>It is not visible in everyday experience.<\/li>\n<li>It is not part of the usual language used to explain cities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That is why communicating it requires a conscious effort to build context.<\/p>\n<p>It is not enough to explain what is going to be done. It is necessary to explain how each decision fits into a wider system.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In practice, communicating interdependence means translating the relationships behind an urban decision so that people can understand them.<\/p>\n<p>This involves several things.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It means connecting each intervention with its knock-on effects.<\/li>\n<li>It means making visible actors and benefits that are normally left out of the explanation.<\/li>\n<li>It means explaining that every urban decision involves trade-offs between different interests.<\/li>\n<li>And it means translating technical decisions into consequences that people can understand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It also means deciding what context each audience needs in order to interpret the change.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone needs to know the whole system. But they do need to understand the relationships that affect the decision in front of them.<\/p>\n<p>When this happens, the perception of the project changes. The city stops being seen as a sum of independent decisions and starts to be understood as an interdependent system that is constantly adjusting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The opportunity: explaining better how the city works<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Interdependence is not a new theory. It is simply the way cities work.<\/p>\n<p>The issue is not its existence, but its visibility.<\/p>\n<p>We can choose not to explain it, and then manage a constant accumulation of partial reactions. Or we can make it visible and build a more structural understanding of urban change.<\/p>\n<p>That is where the real opportunity lies.<\/p>\n<p>Because the challenge is not only to design better cities. It is also to explain better how they work.<\/p>\n<p>And this is where urban project communication takes on a strategic function: it does not simply accompany a transformation, but it helps to build the framework through which that transformation can be understood.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The difficulty is not simply that cities are complex.
